Our involvement with supporting and proposing patient safety legislation began in 2005 when we first testified in favor of the hospital infection reporting bill (HB 1741) and it became evident that patients had no voice. The only people providing testimony were hospital lobbyists, administrators, or physicians who were there primarily to represent the interests of healthcare providers and hospitals. We knew we had to not only change the attitudes and complacency about infections and medical errors that we witnessed inside the healthcare system, but we also needed to reach out and provide legislators with accurate information to help them understand how patients and families lives were being impacted.
Now, twenty-nine states have infection reporting laws and the Centers for Disease Control and many other national healthcare organizations support public reporting because it pressures hospitals to improve and gives consumers the information they need to make informed decisions. The end result is that public reporting saves lives and reduces patient harm.
By working with and educating policy makers, legislators, employees, providers, and most importantly healthcare consumers, we can continue to be heard, but only if we speak up, write a letter, or make a phone call. If your life or the life of a family member or close friend has been impacted by quality-of-care issues, we urge you to take the first step and make your voice heard using the resources provided here. Collectively, we can accomplish our mission for safe, high-quality, compassionate healthcare.
